Knitting Connections

After a recent visit to New York City, I started to think about all the knitters in the world and how we are connected. Connected not only by the craft, but who we know and who meet along the way. Being a member of LinkedIn, I can easily see the connections to people and companies in my industry. This inspired me to write my first blog entry about my latest knitting connections.

While in New York, my project manager Horling, who is an awesome knitter, encouraged me to visit The Point Knitting Cafe. I hopped on the train, and started knitting my latest project to help pass the time, when a fellow rider stopped and chatted with me about knitting. One more knitting connection!

I have to admit; I could not find the shop at first. I roamed around for about an hour looking for Bradford Street. Finally I asked a man on the street for directions. He corrected me (I should have been looking for Bedford Street) and told me where to find the shop. His girlfriend was a knitter, and visits The Point all the time.

I arrived just as it was closing. I told the owner I had trouble finding the shop. She told me to stay and look around as she cleaned up. I loved the shop’s yarns and the fact that it also included a small cafĂ©. In chatting with the shop owner, I learned she was originally from Chicago and worked on the production Jersey Boyz before moving to NYC. However, later I could not verify this information. I found a story about the owner of The Point, and it says nothing about her living in Chicago. So I am not really sure who I was talking to, but I swear I was there.

That weekend after returning home to Chicago, I watched the missed episodes of Knitty Gritty. (My DVR is set to record all Knitty Gritty, Fons and Porter, and Columbo episodes. So matter where I am, I am confident my favorites are being recorded.) I am a huge fan of Vickie Howell and the Knitsters. Vickie announced her guest, John Brinegar, was from The Point in NYC. I was so thrilled to hear this. I was just in the store. Wow – One more knitting connection!

This got me thinking.

I, Tina Miklas, am 2 degrees from Vickie Howell.

I have taken classes with Leigh Radford and Iris Schreier at My Sister's Knits. Both designers have appeared on Knitty Gritty.

Oh wait, it gets better. Last summer at Stitches & Scones in Westfield, IN, I took 2 days of classes with Lily Chin. We had champagne together to toast her trunk show. Dan, my sweetheart, and Lily chatted it up about the Indianapolis Speedway. Lily has been a guest on Knitty Gritty at least 3 times.

Is it a stretch to say I am only 2 degrees away from Vickie Howell? What constituents a degree? Saying hi? Taking a class? Surely having a drink would ;)
